Participants in our South Africa tours have been completely enamored by the country's wealth of photo opportunities and activities -- not to mention the charming accommodations, fine food and excellent wine. South Africa truly is a magnificent country offering the best of Africa, a touch of European sophistication, and the exuberance of a nation boldly embarking upon a new future. Included in our comprehensive itinerary will be the opportunity to photograph landscapes and seascapes, flora and fauna, architecture and people, towns and cities. From the breathtaking vistas of the Cape through the nearby wine country, to coastal lighthouses and Durban, to game viewing of the "big five" just outside Kruger Park in open top vehicles, to fascinating Soweto and Johannesburg, this tour will provide a plethora of diverse and memorable photo opportunities -- not to mention, again, great food & wine.

A price quote will be determined for this tour which will include all ground (air conditioned mini-buses) and air transportation (one domestic flight) in South Africa, accommodations in a variety of charming and comfortable hotels, guest houses, and country lodges, most meals, admission fees, and the services of highly knowledgable and personable English-speaking guides and photo guides who will facilitate all the special requirements of your photographic group.

South Africa Tour Itinerary

Day 1 Morning arrivals at Johannesburg International Airport will be met by Lisa, guide from Safari Lodge Tours and Transfers. Transfer to the guesthouse in Melville, a quiet, quaint, artsy suburb of Johannesburg. In the afternoon there will be a trip to SOWETO. Overnight at Melville House and the Other Melville House.

Day 2 Early start drive to Botshabelo near Middleberg to arrive in time to photograph the early morning light on the local Ndebele mud dwellings, renowned for their murals of bold abstract patterns and bright colors. Continue on east to Lydenberg with overnight at De Ark. (Meals: Breakfast & Dinner)

Day 3 Early morning departure on the famous Panorama scenic circuit via the Three Rondovels and Potholes in the Blyde River Canyon, three spectacular water falls, and Pilgrim's Rest, the old Gold mining town. Continue on to the Itube private game lodge in Sabi Sands in time for late afternoon game drive. First of two nights at the Idube Private Game Reserve <>. (Meals: Breakfast & Dinner)

Day 4 The day will start early in order to leave the lodge just before sunrise in open top vehicles in search of the Big 5 and many other wonderful animals of the African bush. Return to the lodge around mid morning to enjoy a great brunch and well deserved rest. In the afternoon depart for another drive to other interesting parts of the reserve. Return to the lodge after dark for dinner and overnight. (Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 5 Following a final morning game drive, group is collected by guide Peter Whiley who will drive to Northern Kwa-Zulu Natal, skirting around Swaziland via Barbeton to Shayamoya. Accommodations at Shayamoya Lodge <>. (Meals: Breakfast & Dinner)

Day 6 Drive today south into the heart of Zululand to photograph and stay with the friendly Zulus at Shakaland. Shakaland stands below the hills where once stood "Kwabulawayo", the great military kraal of King Shaka. Created for the filming of the highly acclaimed international television series, "Shaka Zulu", it is a Zulu cultural center preserving the traditional customs and lifestyle of the Zulu people. Photographic opportunities abound, especially the evening dance spectacular. Overnight in Shakaland at Hotel Protea. (Meals: Bkfst & Dinner)

Day 7 Depart Shakaland after morning program for Durban with photo ops en route and upon arrival. Overnight on the Durban beachfront at the Protea Hotel Edward. (Meals: Breakfast)

Day 8 Following sunrise on Durban's Indian Ocean beachfront, depart on 8:15 flight to Port Elizabeth to be met by photo tour guide Charlie Ratcliffe. Drive into the Groot Karoo (big Karoo) with its stunning desert landscapes, and on to Ganora Guestfarm near Nieu Bethesda for 1st of two nights. (Meals: Breakfast & Dinner)

Day 9 Photo ops around picturesque Ganora, a working sheep farm which includes a private museum featuring fossils and Bushman implements discovered on the farm. Excursion to the Owl House in Nieu Bethesda. (Meals: Breakfast & Dinner)

Day 10 Drive to Knysna via the Valley of Desolation. Late afternoon photo op at The Heads, colorful rock formations overlooking the Indian Ocean guarding the mouth of the Knysna Lagoon. Accommodations for the night at Knysna Quays. (Meals: Breakfast)

Day 11 Photo op of the Outeniqua Choo Tjoe, a classic vintage steam locomotive, as it rounds a trestle along the Indina Ocean coastline. Drive the Garden Route to Arniston with arrival in time for sunset as the fishing boats come in. First of two nights at the Arniston Hotel <>, one of the world's top ten hideaways according to Time Magazine. (Meals: Breakfast & Dinner)

Day 12 Enjoy photo ops in Arniston of the traditional fishing and Cape Agulhas light house at the most southern point of the continent of Africa. (Meals: Breakfast )

Day 13 Drive to west to the Winelands with a lunch stop in Hermanus (cave restaurant, old harbour, market, etc.) arriving at Vergelegen wine estate, with its historic Cape Dutch manor house, in time for a afternoon photo shoot. Overnight at Sugarbird Manor <> in the Devon Valley near Stellenbosch, the oldest town in South Africa, a thriving university town and the historical headquarters of the Cape wine industry. (Meals: Breakfast & Dinner)

Day 14 Early morning photo ops around the protea and wine farm (views of the valley). Photo shoot in a working wine cellar. Later afternoon arrival in Cape Town and first of four nights at De Waterkant House <>, located in an architecturally interesting and historical Bo Kaap (old slave quarter) area of the city within walking distance to the newly built Cape Quarter shopping centre, the city, restaurants, bars and fashionable nightspots. (Meals: Breakfast)

Alternatively, stay four nights at the Amblewood Guest House B& B in scenic Hout Bay. The Amblewood is owned by retired professional advertising photographer Trevor Kruger and his wife June and has a wonderful view from the front pool deck overlooking beautiful Hout Bay. It's the perfect place to end a Southern Africa photo journey.

Day 15 Today's program needs an early start for a trip to the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, all the way to Cape Point with its light houses and dramatic views, as well as stops to photograph the famous St. James Victorian Bathing Boxes and Penguin Colony at Boulder Beach along the way. (Meals: Breakfast)

Day 16 Full day of photography in and around Cape Town to include a trip by cable car up Table Mountain for a spectacular photographic opportunity. Chapmans Peak Drive, The Castle, District 6, and Victoria and Alfred Waterfront will also be included in the itinerary during the Cape Town stay. (Meals: Breakfast)

Day 17 Full day of photography in Cape Town and at leisure. In the late afternoon, drive to catch the last afternoon light striking the waves off the shore at Bloubergstrand with its spectacular view of Table Mountain in the distance across Table Bay. After shooting until the lights from the city glow across the bay, proceed to a Blouberstrand restaurant adjacent to the beach for a farewell dinner. (Meals: Breakfast & Dinner)

Day 18 Tour ends with tranfers to the Cape Town International Airport for departure from South Africa. (Meals: Breakfast)
